How to Register Your Domain Name

When looking for a domain name, it is recommended that you chose a domain name similar to your brand name. If you do not already have a name picked out for your brand, you may consider to merge the domain name selection process with the brand name selection process. Take a look at the domain registration process below:

Step1: Find a domain name registrar.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) oversees the entire system of top-level domains (TLDs), and it allows outside companies, called domain registrars, to sell and manage domain names. You will need to register your domain name through a registrar.

In Kenya, you can only register a domain name through KeNIC accredited registrars. These are entities that have been licensed to register ccTLDs such as the .co.ke domain. Registrars offer domain names and packages at different prices depending on your interest.

Some of the most popular domain registrars include the Kenya Web Experts, Hostpinnacle, and Lenasi Cloud, although there are many more to choose from. Be sure to carefully consider pricing and policies for each one before choosing your domain registrar, as it will be managing your domain name.

Step 2: Search for your domain name’s availability.

Once you have found the right domain registrar, you’ll need to search for your domain name using the registrar’s search bar. There are millions of domain names out there, with thousands more added daily.

If you have your heart set on a domain name before doing a search, you might be disappointed to find it is already taken. Keep an open mind and incorporate important keywords into your domain when appropriate.

If the name is taken, you can consider selecting a different extension for your domain or tweaking the name to get available domains.

Step 3: Choose a domain name suffix, such as .co.ke or .com

Once you’ve brainstormed several domain options, consider which ones are available and choose the one that fits your brand best and will also be easy for users to find.

After settling on the domain name, consider the suffix. The most popular suffix is .com, although .net and .org are also popular. These are considered to be top-level domains, or the highest-level domain suffixes in the domain naming system.

There are also other varieties to consider, such as country code top-level domains. These domain names end in a suffix that is particular to a specific country. For example, most websites in Kenya end in .ke and those in Germany end in .de

Finally, there is another class of domain name suffixes called “sponsored, top-level domains,” which are sponsored by a specific community related to the domain name. For example, .gov is for the United States government and .africa for organizations with interest in Africa.

For most websites, .com is the best suffix for its ease of use, but if you have a specialized website, you might consider a country code like the .co.ke or sponsored top-level domain such as .africa

Step 4: Purchase the domain name.

When you have settled on the domain name and desired extension, you will pay to register the domain name with the domain registrar. This is not a one-time purchase, however. Typically, you will pay to own the domain name for the duration of your billing cycle.

Domain Extensions

Domain name extension, also known as top-level domain (TLD) or the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) is the last part of a domain name. For example, in ‘poaplace.com,’ the domain name extension is .com. Shown below is an array of common domain extensions in Kenya.

Why Register a Domain?

Your domain name is the address for your website; it is what people use to find your website, which consists of pages, images, and other files.

Registering a domain gives you the exclusive ability to use it for your website. Whether you’re starting a blog, showcasing your portfolio online, or opening an online store, your domain acts as the primary reference point for users looking to find your website, making it inseparable from your brand.

Your domain name is an important part of establishing your brand. No two domain names can be exactly alike, although they can be similar. Ideally, your custom domain name will be unique and distinctive, so users don’t confuse it with other domain names or different businesses.
